Am really glad to see these answers reflecting that this old double standard has become unacceptable :-)

However, I'd add that open relationships shouldn't be dismissed. From what I've encountered, polyamory (i.e loving more than one person (see source below)) works very well for many of the people who act on it. I also think there's something to be said for people who care about each other being able to honestly allow one another the freedom to love and/or enjoy intimacy elsewhere. Having said that, I realise it isn't necessarily an easy path to choose. Indeed, not everyone has the potential to love that way and, of course, no-one should ever feel under pressure that they *should*. However, at the same time, it seems a little unfair that we are encouraged by society to automatically believe we *shouldn't* (i.e that it is somehow wrong).

In a lot of traditional cultures the husband never leaves his wife, and actually does love her. BUT it is okay for them to have a mistress! THAT'S THERE CULTURAL BELIEFS!

But Amercian beliefs IT IS 'NOT' okay for either to go outside of a committed relationship, whether married or not!

IT ISN'T!!!! People, women as well as men, tend to set double standards. In other words, it's okay for one sex, but not the other.

It's okay for men to cheat, ride a Harley, drink beer and play poker with the guys, but not for the women. However, it's okay for women to go shopping with the girls, feel unwell because of "female things", and cry.

it's more acceptable in society when a man cheats b/c throughout history very powerful men have always cheated on their wives. many past presidents had line-in mistresses. it's not ok for men or women to do it in my opinion, but in the opinion of society, women should have more sense then men. that's why it seems more taboo for them.
