Speaking as a freelance video games writer with years of experience...

I would wait, whatever.

By Xbox I assume you mean the 360.

Take several factors into account. Firstly, a console is not much use on its own; it is only as good as the games which run on it. The only thing of interest about a console to most people is whether it's reliable or not.

I would like to know how many games your son's likely to own. If it's only a handful, then it's possible he'll be happy with the 360. But bear in mind when the PS3 comes out it will be months before any reasonably good games come out for it, as the titles availble at release are usually pretty weak (and short).

If your son's likely to own a hundred or more I would be more inclined to say wait for the PS3. Traditionally, Sony's consoles attract far more quality games than the others.

For example, I own 30+ consoles/computers, for which I own thousands of games. Now, I own all the current consoles, and I have to say that although there are some great games for the current Xbox, there aren't that many, or rather there aren't as many as on the PS2 or the Gamecube. So based on this it's only natural that this trend will continue onto the new consoles.

Next, regarding reliability. Both Sony and Microsoft have not had great reliability with their current units. Yes, I know there's people who have still got their original ones, but, both the Xbox and PS2 have all had disc read error problems due to dodgy drives. But how they were deadlt with is completely different. A call to Sony will mean that you have a replacement on your door usually the next day. A call to Microsoft means they send you a box to send your faulty one back in... Doesn't take Einstein to see which one leaves you without something to play, does it?

Lastly, concerning games prices. The games that I don't get sent (lucky me), I usually buy used. Now, when the PS3 comes out, they're going to be expensive and few used copies will exist, whereas Xbox360 used copies will be pretty prevalent by then. Also, using a bit of guesswork, comparing current Xbox and PS2 used game prices, Xbox games usually come out marginally cheaper with a lot of their best games currently fetching much less than a tenner, with the PS2 versions are about a quid or so more.

Sorry this may offer more questions than answers, but you've got to be aware of all the facts.

PS3 for the most part.
But this depends on a number of factors though...

Maybe he has games already for a system
What type of games does he play
Can he wait the few months until the PS3 is released
Maybe he wants a specific game which is only available on a certain system

I have seen a PS3 in Japan and I was very impressed, the graphics looked smoother and there is absolutely no doubt there will be 10 times more games available on the PS3 than an Xbox 360. I think the Xbox has some better points than the PS3 but at the end of the day if you can't buy the games you want to play it is irrelevant.

Hope this helps

will xbox 360 runs swifter, has a more suitable desirable images card. with xbox u can make ur personal avatar, earn awards to customise ur avatar, the controller feels more suitable organic round ur hand, the button format is more suitable desirable. The xbox has a FPS series noted as Halo that is a variety of of relaxing to play and the recent Halo 4 became chosen because the dazzling xbox recreation of 2012. The PS3 has fairly some performance themes and the controller sucks in basic terms please do no longer purchase it. even with the actuality that do no longer purchase a console yet because the Xbox 720 is coming i imagine this Christmas and the ps4 also, and the ps4 seems to have given the 720 alot to stay as a lot as and Microsoft continues to be no longer conserving something more suitable about the 720 yet do no longer purchase a console yet, in basic terms wait.

(firstly i assume u mean the x-box360) i think sony last time made a mistake with the PS2 it came out b4 the x-box. It had lesser graphics capabilities than it although grafics arnt everything they do contribute to the feel of a game and its realisim both consoles games were very good do play and both brought out classic titles that wont be forgotten but in my opinnion the ps2 fell behind because of this. especially in the latter years when the games looked cheep and tacky unable to keep up. it is fot this reason i reccomend the ps3 sony wont make this mistake again and even now the ps3 grafix engine is by far and away the greatest we have ever seen!you will find that with the advancement of grafix cards in that games coming out in the future wont be able to be converted onto all consoles from the pc and that only the pc and ps3 will have the titles also( this has happened with the ps2 Doom3being one such title unable to be realeased for ps2 owners only the x-box and pc could run its grafix . so go for the ps3 it will be more expensive when it comes out but it will last longer and be the head of the competetion for longer not to mention that sonys own games are tremendous as well i will be getting one i suggerst u do to

XBox 360, the PS3 is more expensive, only has a few good series of games coming out and the online service isn't as good.

Most the good games for the PS3 will be come out on the 360 also, even with extra features in some cases (GTA4). The PS mostly used to be good for RPGs, which are going to the 360 now.

The Xbox 360 is / will be better than the PS3,
The games are out now etc, and the On-Line community
is there. But I agree that in waiting for the release of PS3,
The price will Drop massivly for the Xbox. Plus you try both out.

Encourage him to research it thoroughly himself. This will be a good experience for him as it will teach him to gather all the facts and make a decision based on them. Guide him through the process and it will help prepare him for similar situations in adult life.

I'm afraid I don't know anything about either console.
