Anything written by O Henry is good. His stories have a characteristic twist at the end(both the happy ones and the sad ones).Cop and the Anthem,Last leaf are afew of his good ones.Cop and the anthem is about a young tramp Soapy who desperately tries to get arrested so that he can spend the winter comfortably in jail.He tries eating in expensive restaurents without paying, stealing and a lot of other ways but he never gets arrested.
Another great writer is Anton Chekov. His stories have plenty of humor and irony

There are four short stories in Different Seasons by Stephen King. . . The short stories that were the basis for the movies Shawshank Redemption (and Rita Hayworth) and Stand By Me (The Body) are two of the short stories in this book, very excellent reading.

Cathedral by Raymond Carver is a landmark short story collection. Ostensibly part of the "American Minimalist" movement in fiction, Carver writes about ordinary people coping with ordinary pressures of life. But his writing is anything but ordinary - precise, moving, illuminating.
William Trevor is a giant among short story writers. You could say he's almost a British Raymond Carver but he came first. Pick up his "Collected Stories" and revel in the riches within. Also a great novelist - "Fools of Fortune" is just one example.

With anthologies I find its easiest to find a common theme amongst all the stories and pull a title out of that If there is no common theme, you could go for a random title that has nothing to do with any of the stories Or you could directly relate the title to one story and start the collection with that story Hope I helped?

A short story is generally one that focuses on a single idea. Less depth or character development than a novel in general, but sometime that is a blessing.
Generally you are talking 50 or less pages.
I am partial to humor and Science Fiction and bad puns. I would recommend
"Callahan's crosstime saloon" by Spider Robinson. And it googles very nicely if you want some info on it.

From the silly to the simply smashing, the Chicks in Chainmail are back to save us once again! Whether defending a charity ball against rapscallion pirates or taking names at a medievalist tournament in the Asteroid Belt, whether bringing a snotty loremaster to his rightful comeuppance or protecting our schoolchildren from magically-summoned barbarian invaders, whether weekending in the woods to get in touch with their Inner Warrior or showing giant reptiles that Tokyo's not gonna take it anymore, these female fighters will always have what it takes.
So what are you waiting for? Pick up your male -- er, mail!
