My favorite is "In Search of Captain Zero" by AC Weisbecker. He tells the story of his road trip down the Baja peninsula and then mainland Mexico and into Central America, in search of a long lost old friend.

A great read, especially if you like surfing, because he surfs everywhere along the way.

Another favorite travel book is "The Size of the World: Once Around Without Leaving" by Jeff Greenwald, which tells the story of the author's trip around the globe, without taking any planes.

I'm not sure it quite qualifies, but Assassination Vacation by Sarah Vowell was very good.
