Once U sign in to ur Messenger
Click on the Messenger Menu
Select Alert and Sounds
Uncheck Enable Alert Sounds.

From the menu select:
Messenger -> Preferences
Select 'Alerts & Sounds' contained in the list on the left.
Select the alert you want the sound switched off ('A messenger contact comes online') and then uncheck 'Playing a sound'
You can also disable all sounds by unchecking 'Enable Alert Sounds'

a small correction to the above ..... Once you log in .... on the Messenger menu u'll find Preferences ..... Click on that and goto to the Sounds & Alerts category .... uncheck the top box or u can customize ur sound preferences.

Go to "Messenger" > "Preferences" > "Alerts & Sounds".
Un-check "Enable Alert Sounds."
Now you can still listen to the music on your PC and see your friends appearing on Yahoo!, but not have those irritating sounds.

open yahoo messenger main windows where u can see ur buddy list, then click messenger then choose preference-alert & sounds-uncheck enable enable alerts souns-apply-ok. done!

go to messenger - preferences(Ctrl+Shift+P)
and go to aletrs&sounds on your left then u can disable all sound or u coustmized it
