The cells of our body are very much like the recharable batteries that we use. Only, our cells dont need electricity to recharge. A part of the cell called mitochondria starts producing energy by utilizing the O2 that we breath. This is a continuous process, but since when we are awake, we expend more energy physically and mentally, than is produced, the cells get "discharged" after about 18 hours of wakefulness. Hence, the body slips into energy-saving mode, i.e., sleep mode, the energy produced in this period of sleep recharges the cells and 6-8 hours later, we're all charged up and refreshed.
Although, you "rested" physically, you were still awake. Your brain was definitely at work using up precious energy that was already reaching rock-bottom levels. Hence, once that residual energy got over, you would need to sleep and get recharged.

I sleep to lay down my eyes and dream pleasant things. Also, resting on a bed brings many thoughts at the same time to my mind and I want to relax and not think. That is another reason for actually sleeping. And also, if you weren't so tired, it was obvious you would't go to sleep. Yet 6 hours is a long time.

you're mind needs to rest as well shuga. least i know mine does, if i don't eventually get some sleep my reactions slow down which can be worrisome. and prolonged sleep depravation can induce hallucinations and depression. but it's fun to stay up a few days every once in a while...makes things interesting :)
