I've had manicured nails for twelve years now and for as long as that my right thumb nail splits in the exact same spot. It's on the finger not the tip, what causes this?

You have damaged your nail way back underneath the cuticle. This results in a continual split that runs from the cuticle right the way down to the tip.

I see this alot. Thes best thing you can do if it is mild, is to buff the nail regularly so you emilinate any roughness. This will prevent you from snagging the chipped nail on materials and making it worse. When buffin make sure you use a gentle buff and only do this 1-2 times per month depending on the thickness of your nail.

You should also apply cuticle oil way back into the cuticle. This will help to condition the nail as it grows so it will not be as brittle.

Apply a base coat or clear coat of nail polish for extra protection.

This is a common problem. Perhaps you got your finger caught in a door. The thing is, it will proably always be there, but at least you can lessen the severity of the problem following these basic treatments.

Good luck.

as has been said an accident or infection could be to blame, or it could simply be genetic- and 'switched on' by a typical American diet: burgers, cola etc. whose vast sugar content turns on genes that predispose us to bone and hair problems, which often also is reflected in nails. Nails often suffer from a lack of calcium, (found in milk, or through taking a supplement), vitamin D and E. Try eating oily fish like salmon, mackerel, getting out in the sun and taking a mineral supplement too, but not too often..

you could had damaged your thumb nail years ago and not realized or remember but sometimes a nail fungus can cause this too. I would'nt recommend putting any acrilic nails over it and maybe consult your doctor about it. You could also be lacking vitamins.

Sometimes you get weak nails because your lacking in calcium , you could have more dairy products and or either use "strengthening"nail polish.
