Due to different sources of supply and non-standardisation, it would be better if you take bottled water for drinking purposes, particularly if you are a traveller and not fully aware of the local conditions in any area.
Bottled water is marked "ISI" or "FPO" and conform to certain standards fit for human consumption. Also ensure that bottle is sealed when delivered to you.
Rest, it is not havoc like situation as depicted here earlier to my response. Just precaution is better.

Always drink bottled water. Before drinking , inspect the seal to insure the bottle has not been refilled from a river. Drink name brand water. Never ask for ice in your drinks, as ice is often made from bad water . For the few pennies that bottles water costs, would you want to take a chance of being really sick for a week , or even dying ?

Many foreigners do drink tap water in India. If you are a thoroughly sterlized person in your country, then go for bottled mineral water.
Someone has said about his water in the answer column. He appears to be a crank and he should immediately consult a psychiatrist.

You have to be totally out of your mind to even think about drinking tap water in a "developing" country. Drink only bottled water, and don't eat anything unless it is HOT. ( heat not spicey ) Be prepared to spend alot of time on the toilet. Your guts are not prepared for what awaits you over there! Be careful!

Ok....don't over exaggerate...yes perhaps drinking tap water is not a good idea for those with weak immune systems (those who have never been out of U.S. or any other developed country, their whole life)
But you are not goint to die if you drink it once...you can alwayz boil the water.
If not you will have to face Montezuma's revenge.....lol ;)
