Corn on the cob isn't appropriate to be served at a formal dinner because it's eaten so casually. What you can do is to shave the kernels of corn with a knife. Stick your fork on the side of the cob and then start shaving away. This only works with a steak knife.

Anyway, if the host doesn't know that corn-on-the-cob shouldn't be served in a formal setting then I suppose anything goes with the way it should be eaten.

I've never heard of a corn fork, but you probably wanna aoid corn on the cob all together, because their isn't really any way to eat it elegantly. Try replacing that with sweetcorn of the cob.

Try holding the cob upright on one end with a fork or one of those things that you sometimes get to hold it with and slicing the corn off the cob then eating it.

If the person(s) organizing the dinner are serving corn on the cob, lobster, spaghetti, lasagne, or anything like that, they don't really know what they're doing. At formal events like that, avoid like the plague messy foods like the ones I described above. No one looks good in a bib and a moist towelette.

Use a knife to trim off the corn then eat it with your fork as per usual. Works for me at a formal dinner. Remember there are some things that you can use your hand even at formal dinner :)

Use corn forks if provided. If not, you're pretty well buggered.

As shown in link below, corn forks, you spear one into each end of the cob, and use as handles.
