Can you get pregnant if you have sex while you are on your period?
In order for someone to get pregnant, egg and sperm have to come together. Thus, if a woman has sex on or near the time when she is ovulating, her eggs can become fertilized. Menstruation is a time in a woman's cycle when she is typically sloughing off unfertilized eggs. Therefore, the likelihood of getting pregnant is slim-- but it is not zero. For one thing, there is no guarantee that eggs are not present at this time. Thus fertilization could occur. In addition, once sperm is deposited in the uterus, it remains viable for period of time—approximately five days. If this sperm, deposited during menstruation, comes into contact with an egg at a later point in time, fertilization can occur. So, the answer to your question is "Yes".
If you use birth control pills, these will protect you from pregnancy during menstruation, just as they do during the rest of the month. However, if you do not use pills but employ another method, such as condoms, it is advisable that you continue doing so even during your period.

it's perfectly fine to have sex during period. Just messy.
Doesn't cause disease. Yes you can get pregnant. The sperm can swim in there for days and reach a ripe ovum at ovulation. A period is not a birth control method.
