People too often use the word "obese" when all they mean is "a little overweight". Obesity is a disease. Being (a little) overweight is not.
Some people seem to have a genetic predisposition towards obesity. There is some research that suggests that obesity is helped along by a particular virus, but more corroborating research still needs to be done on this.
The bottom line, however, is, if you want to lose weight (if you are a little overweight that is) the surefire way to do it is to simultaneously increase the amount of physical exertion you do (i.e. exercise) and reduce your caloric intake (i.e. eat less). You do these two things in combination, and in time, you will lose weight. It's that simple. Stop wasting your time on all these "take one pill a day and do nothing else, and you'll lose 100 pounds a day" quick fix cures.

Apart from 'medical conditions' which are rare anyway, I do belive there are some excuses, for example, in certain situations parents feed their children large portions from birth. (have you seen nutty professor?) I know a family largely like that (no pun intented) and their mum feeds them so much, that by the time they are old enough to do anything about they can't or its extremely difficult and almost pointless, which is sad but this is the case in some cases. Some peopl are just greedy, in which case no, there is no excuse.

No there isn't because you are in control of how much you eat and whether you excersise or not. People that blame the fast food industry are stupid because nobody tells you to buy the supersize drink with the double pattied hamburger. That's your choice and you deal with the consequences that follow your choice.

There isn't an excuse for stupidity, yet here it is once again. There are many reasons why a person is fat. Like they have a medical condition that holds body fat...Before asking a question like this you should maybe educate yourself on it. Fat people are not lazy, they usually work harder then the skinny person. So educate yourself.

My mum nearly died from obesity. at 5"2, and 30 stone, her heart failed. When she met the surgeon who did her gastric bypass and saved her life, he told her she was missing an enzyme threat metabolised fat. so (guess there is, sometimes. although generally its to much lard, not enough running.

i dont think its genes but rather family habits of exercise and eating created from birth and must be controlled. i see lots of obese moms that have obese kids, or parents that spoil there kids.
