sometimes I swap lines, but if I swap my "old" queue suddenly gets its **** into gear and I would have gone through quicker had I stayed there. Is this a conspiracy?

It's partly an illusion, partly a statistical issue.

If you can see, say, 4 other queues beside your own, then you only have a one in five chance of being in the fastest queue. You also only have a one in five chance of being in the slowest queue, but you don't tend to notice that - people notice when they're being overtaken, not when they're being left behind.

So relax, and try chatting to the other people in the queue. You won't get there any faster, but it will feel faster!

Yes it seems to be a law of nature. Its most frustrating at the supermarket when the person in front of you just stands and watches as all the items are checked through before starting to pack them in bags. Then, and only then,do they start rummaging in their bag for a purse to get out their card. I'm sorry to have to say this, but its usually women responsible:)
Here are my tips at the checkout:
Avoid queues with two or more women (especially elderly)
Look for queues with single men in them
Its not always fastest to use the 'less than 10 items' checkout - 5 people with a few items can take longer to pay as one person with a trolley full. Its the paying that takes up time.

Your queue is always longest because you like the same things everyone else likes. If you want shorter queues, try dancing to a different beat. Just because something is unpopular it doesn't make it bad and you might just find something more interesting than what you are used to.

I seem to have the same kind of luck so it just might be that SO many of get the same ideas at the same time. Is this called environmental conditioning? Must be a name for it some place.

Yes its definitely a conspiracy by the staff. What happens is the checkout girl is in radio contact with security, when you are spotted on camera security tells checkout girl to slow down. When you join next line he tells her to speed up.Next time you shop go in disguise so they cannot spot you. That way you will beat them.

i totally agree.and the one straight in front of you always decides to pay with a card or something and it takes even longer.why not just take money with you when you go shopping especially food shopping.

That's the Murphy's Law, universally applicable.

The things which should happen, won't happen and those should not happen, keep happening.
