An engagement ring is a gift from the man to his intended bride.
Traditionally, if the man broke the engagement, as with any gift, the woman can keep the ring. But, if the woman breaks the engagement, because it was a very expensive gift, she would return the ring.

No one should be forced to do anything, but a strong recommendation is in order. Ultimately it is up to her so if she decides not to return the ring you will have to live with her decision. Next time be more careful before placing an expensive rock on a woman's finger. In the future, you should go to marriage counseling first to assess your compatibility and then see if she is serious about getting married in the months to follow. For now you'll just have to hope that she is not the greedy type and returns the ring.

I think that if she breaks off the engagement that she should give the ring back. Keeping it seems wrong to me.

Yes, the ring is a symbol of love, a breaking off of a wedding is not.

Yes, I think so! What if she rakes in lots of money by selling rings from all the guys she abandoned? Yea there is memories, but she was the one denying all of them by breaking it off. Maybe she can give it back until she decides she is really ready... But the guy spend the money on the ring, & the girl didn't commit, so I believe it is still his ring!

I have read about this...
If a ring is given with the intention of marriage and for no occasion (other than you were just proposing), then it has to be given back. If she wants to keep it, she has to pay you back for what you spent on it, providing you can have a receipt or show it's dollar value.
If it was given as a gift, say for Christmas, birthday present, etc. (although still with then intention of marriage), then no, she does not have to give it back. It was a gift from you to her.

If she did not pay for it, then she should give it back gracefully and have the manners to do it herself without being forced. If she refused to, he could sue her in small claims court for the dollar value of the ring or the ring itself, and hopefully realize that he would not want to be with someone that greedy anyway. Then, they would return all the presents that people gave them.

From what I remember learning, legally she does have to give back the ring, providing the guy did infact buy it or give it to her. If the guy broke off the engagement she would be allowed to keep it.

Why would a woman want to keep a ring that was given in good faith as a symbol of two people who were to be bound together for life? Of course she should return it.
