Not every cop is like that, however a lot of street cops who like being on the street so much never have the desire to continue education or test for promotion. I graduated 1st in both of my academy classes, the 2nd with Dallas PD. I'm still taking college classes, just because I like to learn. I enjoy keping updated on daily legal decisions, and attorney general opinions ( which carry the weight of case law) and subscribe to a host of legal publications. I think I's like the challenges of being a criminal defense attorney, but have peronal reasons against it. Believe it or not, some of the most intelligent officers I know, young and enthuistiastic, or eventually pulled down by the culture of a long standing department. That's why its hard to change the culture, the moral, and the training. Most field trainers have been around a long time, and know matter what's atught in the academy, learning how to apply it on the street is a different issue. And if you go against the grain as a rookie, you want make it very far, and will get a reputation of not being cooperative or a team player. Its much more complex that I like to admit, and I'm ure my colleagues would argue against me. But then I've learned not to have to depend on anyone for legal advice or policy options, and as a field trainer, a lot of officers seek me out instead of supervisors for advice. Nobody like calling a supervisor, except to cya. When reporters and COPS shows up, usually supervisors have their favorites they place them with. Sometimes its based on location of the beat, mostly on sgt's favorites, and a lot of times those are guys who make a lot of noise so to speak, letting everyone know they're making lots of arrests and want everyone to know it.

I have a friend who's a cop, and while he's not the brightest bird on the branch, he's far from being an idiot. I think his college degree made him someone they really wanted when he showed an interest, and they are already talking about taking him off the streets and oputting him behind a desk, so maybe thats the problem... all the idiots never get promoted to being off the streets.
That being said though, I think I would love a job where I was expected to be an idiot. There would be so much less stress in trying to impress the boss. Although if my boss was an idiot, that would piss me off.

Well - it is hardly all cops... but I do know what you mean - there definitly seem to be a disproportionate number of below average cops out there.
Of course - that is probabbly also likley due to the very public nature of police work. We see all of them and all of the stupid things they do, all the time, and when they screw up, it makes the paper - for a week. If there were a show called "Plumbers" people might think that all plumbers were below average too.
Of course - it could be you - you could be imagining that "average" is much higher than it really is - but chances are that, as an avid "Cops" viewer that is not likley the case.

I have 3 of 'em in my family. 3 of my brothers. one just took an early retirement ( he is the dumbest and thrived on the power that the badge gave him) another is still a cop ( i wouln't trust him as far as i could throw him) and the 3rd just quit 'cause he couldn't stand the corruption ( he's the smartest).
People who are power hungry and will abuse that power seek out such positions! persons who are intelligent or educated don't
apply to be cops.

sir, u do not have a below average IQ. those tests don't mean anything except to find extreme skews. Police people? Like u said, they are largely uneducated, avoid the MMPI per their trade union, as the MMPI will spot the 80% of them who r socio-paths....cops are terrirfyed of psychological assesments. MD shrinks they can fool, but *not* psychologists.
More pathetic though is how they draft their spouse with notions of sugar-plumes, fairy's, and benefits. Benefits! These worthless girls will stick up for their prick husbands even if they murder the 11 year old boy next door for riding their son's bicycle without judicial sanction. Pigs work at the level of intangenence. They steal things that are invisible; like education. Pigs like nothing better than to bust the 18 year old valedictorian for rape b/c he had sex with his 17 year old girlfriend who's also a senior and won the HS tennis crown (females, pig, females), 3 years running. She get's humiliated, he lose's scholarships and financial aid; can't serve in the military, go to medical school, law school, dental school, vetereranian school, chiro-practy, get a city, county, state, or federal job, or ever establish credit. They can't even get a passport. Pig wives retort, and in typical republican manor, "They shouldn't have been goofing around". When in fact her two sons, 24, and 20, raped me repeatedly in the stable. Oh, and that was always before or after they dealt the heroin daddy stole from a dealer. I don't think much of cartel dudes either, but I think they deserve a trial. Don't you, Miss Piggy? My parents are extremely successful. My home I'm composing this tirade from is for sale @ 6million dollars. It's 14 acres, a stable (no horses though), roughed up tennis court, and garden pool. They have 2 cars, a Lear jet, and 4 snowmobiles. My brother and I prefer the elegance of a chauffered Jaguar limo. The staff of 9 - 12 are welcome to occupy the 6,000 sq foot guest house whenever they want. We have at our disposition, a sober driver 24/7. Yet the police family next door has agated estate even more expansive then ours. On a single pig salary? How can this be? Did I hear someone whisper "corruption"?
I'll never be self-actualized until I kill an innocent pig family member. Not the pig, but a family member, perhaps a son, daughter, or dog. The next time my rapeist's father stops me to ask, "What are you thinking about Spencer?", I'll poison another random rebublican *****. But not until I have sex with her - permission or not. Plz recall that the neighbor (?) pig boys have raped me repeatedly. They've hurt me, and I hate them more than anything I've ever hated in my life. But Michele (matriarch) laughs about it and says to me over and over, "The best thing about working in law enforcement is that you can do anything you want". There's so much to shoot at.

lol Ok you nailed it. Its scary to think that someone with less education is protecting is and has all legal rights to carry a gun.
A client of a hospital where they made brain transplantations asked about the prices.
The doctor said, "Well, this Ph.D. brain costs $10,000. This brain belonged to a NASA top scientist and costs $15,000. Here we have a policeman's brain as well. It costs $50,000."
The client asked, "What? How's that possible?"
The doctor replied, "You see, it's totally unused."
I like that one. :) ok one more and ill quit.
A policeman stops a lady and asks for her license. He says "Lady, it says here that you should be wearing glasses."
The woman answered "Well, I have contacts."
The policeman replied "I don't care who you know! You're getting a ticket!"
I do agree with you!

I got pulled over because as I was going around a police car that was blocking traffic( officer was sitting in the car at the time, and should have moved car out of the way) I shook my head in disbelief. The officer turned on the lights and pulled me over to ask if I shook my head at her. I didnt know that was against the law. silly me I have since reported this officer to the police cheif for violating my civil rights. Still waiting on reply.

dear actually what ever u see on TV its is created by the director giving evidence or link in murder case or and others situation. but in life it is very difficult to find the links for example many mysteries r lying un solved in many countries now after so many years with the help of technology like DNA and others they were able to solve the issues now.
