You have to wear your seatbelt, because seatbelts "save lives". But you can still smoke a cigarette and drive. Is that not enough proof that the "law" makers don't give a rat's a$$ about your safety?
*According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), an estimated 5,500 lives could be saved each year by increasing the level of safety belt use in the United States to 90 percent. Yet, only 68 percent of Americans wear safety belts.
*Every year over 179,000 people die of smoking related heart disease.
*Over 159,000 die of cancer.
*Over 80,000 people die of other smoking related causes, ranging from emphysema to fires.
**Each year, smoking kills more people than AIDS, alcohol, drug abuse, car crashes, murder, suicides, and fires -- combined!
So, be sure to buckle-up before you fire up that butt!

OK, people. Let me put this in a "simple" way...I am not necesarilly anti-tobacco. I am against law makers saying that the reason the seatbelt laws were passed is because they are concerned for our safety. I have to "simplify" way too often on this site.

It seems that what bothers you most is the inconsistency of laws. We have laws that are supposedly in place (like the seatbelt law) to protect ourselves from harming ourselves -- yet we have not legislated all forms of self-harm. What I find most annoying is the artificiality of saying we pass these laws to "save lives." I believe the reality is that we pass these laws to save other taxpayers for picking up the cost of a person's health care if they've chosen self harming behavior. (Examples: seat belts, motorcycle helmets, recreational drug use.) If we were just honest, and said these things are illegal because we as a society don't want to have to bear the costs associated with medically caring for those injured as a result of less "safe" behavior, I think most of us would find such laws much less distasteful.

Tha answer is politics; for two reasons
1. Lobbyists, we get this to an extent in the UK but in the states, a vested interest does seem to carry a great deal of weight. The tobacco industry has too much money to be ignored.
2. Politicians don't want to upset the middle classes and the status quo. Look at the drugs issue; Legalising all drugs would ultimately save lives and remove the industry from the hands of criminals. Unfortunately, however many benefits would come from this, the administration that passed this law would alienate the middle class vote and probably lose the next election.
I am not a criminal, but If new laws passed were based on reason then people in general may respet them more. As it stands at present the motivating factors seem to be fear of litigation and political power; not a particularly solid criteria for establishing the cornerstone of society is it?

Wow you hate law but want another one against smoking??? I too think the seatbealt law is in violation of what should be our civil liberties and many other laws that cater to the large corporations...It should be obvious that these laws are there because large corporations have large lobbies. You just gave a great example of two large lobbies the insurance and the tobaco lobbies...as long as legislators and other politicians can get elected by catering to lobbiest and corporate America this country will never be free.

From what i have study, I keep in mind that you hate your pal, yet you do not should be so rude about it. You sound very conserved, don't have time for foolishness, and extremely extreme. Plus, no longer being her pal because each and everyone hates her is actual one of the worst excuse i have ever heard. If something, it can make you want to be her pal, so as that she doesn't sense so lonely. reading that very last sentence, you reported you've been a shy man or woman and don't love that about your self, and by ability of your description she sounds very outgoing and doesn't care if she seems "stupid." possibly you 2 ought to study some issues from one yet another; she will be in a position to coach you about being more suitable outgoing, and also you'll prepare her to mellow out some. That way you 2 can detect a stability. slightly common actuality to boot, and that i visit inform this from adventure, the happiest persons are frequently the most depressed. i do not comprehend, even with the undeniable fact that it truly is something to imagine about. yet in case you nevertheless want to easily decrease your losses from her, in basic terms tell her you don't desire to be her pal anymore. straight forward. truly, ignoring her and making your self unavailable ought to easily make issues worse and carry about undesirable and unneeded disagreement. desire this enables.

A perfect "law" does not exist in any country.Following rule of law is needed for an orderly society.I can not break the law even if I hate it.Smoking at public places is also prohibited by law in most countries. It is true some people violate the law,but laws can not be scrapped for that reason.

Uhhhh... and how is it that it is legal to have an abortion.... yet someone goes into a hospital and kills a newborn... and they rot in jail... what sense does that make? The legal system in the US is so screwed up that its gonna take allot to get it back the way it should be!
