What Does Semi Monthly Mean

Actually, if you got paid every two weeks, you'd get 26 paychecks in the year. If you get paid semi-monthly, you get 24 paychecks in a year. That's an important difference.

Semi-monthly paychecks usually come on the same two days each month. State workers here get paid on the 5th of the month and the 20th, so today was payday--who-HOO!. If you get paid semi-monthly, it's easier to plan your bills. You get paid on the 5th, so you make your student loan come out of your bank account on the 6th, and pay your rent with the paycheck you get on the 20th.

I've been paid both ways. If you are paid every two weeks, you are usually paid on the same day of the week, but it could be the 1st, 15th, and 29 of this month, 13th and 27th of next month, etc. If you get paid every two weeks, you have to plan a little more carefully to make sure all of your monthly bills will come out of one paycheck or ther other. The bonus is, you get an "extra paycheck" twice a year you can spend on Christmas shopping, a trip out of town, car insurance...
