2 of my seven children were DIY births.
One of them (#5) I was totally alone as had no warning whats so ever, boy did I suffer afterwards too. My body went into shock and I was very ill for about a month afterward.
My 6th child I had my husband with me as I went into labor in the night, had a bath, did my housework then thought was a good idea to push the kids off to school so could go off to hospital to have baby and be back before they got home. (I discharge myself immediately after all). While my husband was gone, I had her on my loo floor. My husband had called our neighbour who was holding my number 5 (DIY).
I made it to hospital in time with number 7. I went into labor at 3pm and held off until midnight but weren't taking any chances of having to be my own midwife again. When I had my DIY births, both times I had to give my previous experience (of child birth) to the paramedics as they didn't know what to do.
Did you know that if you do give birth alone, you are supposed to wrap the placenta up and keep the same level as the baby. The placenta is to be kept warm as the supply to the baby hasn't been separated (cord cut). I told the paramedics this with second DIY birth while they waited for a midwife and second ambulance to arrive as they didn't have a clue.
So, it doesn't matter how much somebody is with you, if that baby wants to come when you are alone, then it will. Just be ready to ring your other half double quick if needed. Your body does give signs too, I just had them all through my latter pregnancys so couldn't read the signs any longer...lol
