The historical reason is because if the woman is polygamous, the man has no idea if the offspring he is supporting is his own.

You'll never hear someone say "I'm the father, but I don't know who the mother is!".

we can all agree that women have as much right as men when it comes to practicing polygamy, but it still would be sneered at in any society. It ofcourse has a biblical background; it was always like "take the woman you like, as long as you gave her father the proper dowry, and you kept your other wives satisfied"; and "if you found your daughter/wife/kinwoman committing 'adultery', take her outside the town's gate and stone her behind". So even The Almighty [who is a Male by the way] is prejudiced against women. I've heard it being said that it would hurt a man more than it does a woman if he found hiswife cheating. Which has something to do with his.. you know.. role as "the man of the house", "the provider", the "head of the house" etc etc thing (which, again, has a biblical background) - implying failure in his duties (as a man and the wearer of the "trouser" in the house). What we can safely conclude, therefore, is the bible is responsible for centuries of ill-treatement of women.

Which is why i stopped believing in it!

Well, most places where polygamy is allowed - it's because of the role of the man and woman in that society.

Men are usually considered the guardians and protectors over women - they should help feed, clothe, and nurture them. In this case, if there were ever a lack of men, they would be allowed to practice polygamy (MARRYING and taking responsibility for more than one wife) in order to make sure that ladies are not left without guardians.

This question is rooted in simple biology. Whereas a man can reproduce multiple times with many women, a woman cannot reproduce multiple times with multiple male partners. The spreading of seed and therefore value and power was the reason for polygamy.

I don't accept for any men or women to practise polygamy but fact is more and more people has multiple sex partner thinking in their mind from TV shows,movies especially after 9/11, everything changed,even women are enjoying their "sex" life with different sex partner in difference races,sizes,ages permanently or temperately.
For me this is sad but true,nothing can change in the near future.

Because we have been programed to think that its ok for Men to do what ever they want. But Women have a code of conduct to follow. Its old school views that have not yet filtered out of main stream society.

This baffles me because a man will say: " Because Men are doing the giving and women are recieveing." and " Who wants a person who has already been around"?

Well, its a double standard. Why would a woman want a man whore? Like we should just accept that our man has been with 20 women and its perfectly fine. Screw that crap!

Modern genetics has revealed the reason behind the urge of polygamy in living beings. For a male, polygamy is genetically favourable as he tries to pass on his genes to as many progeny as possible, thus ensuring the survival of his race. For women, things r more complicated. She tries to pick in the genes of the genetically most "fit for survival" man. In fact studies have proven "sperm murdering" among sperms from different males. So genetically speaking, promiscuity is favourable for both sexes. But then we r social creatures, & have to abide by some rules...

Polygamy is reserved for men, beacuse this is the man's world. However, in certain cultures, that still exist in central Africa, it is allowed to women to have more sexual partners, in order to fulfill their sexual needs and to reproduce as much fresh genetic materials as possible.

In European culture (which is also practised in USA and Canada, as well as in the most of the "western" and "eastern" world"), a man is considered as the ruler, and thus was able to make rules that allow polygamy. Polyandry (more male partners for one woman) is condemned because of mixing blood of royalty with commons, and that was the main reason for forbidding polyandry in European culture.

Monogamy is acceptable, because it is acustomed since the ancient times. However, neither man nor woman are monogamous beings. Polygamy originates from animals, where dominating male fertilises all females in the herd, providing strong and survivable genetic material for the rest of the herd. Aside of some birds, the humans are the only monogamous beings in the world, but it is not natural monogamy. Finally, polyandry is forbidden even in animal world, because of possibility for making an incompetent creature, that would not survive.

This pattern is inhereted by human culture (royal families menitioned above). However, liberation of women gave them possibility to choose as many partners as they like, and that event was not liked by men, who finally got the reason to feel totaly insecure about their manhood.

So, in spite of very liberate points of view to a polyandry, men are the ones that condemn multiplicity of partners for one woman, neglecting the simple fact that this very behavior gives them a chance to mate, if they got chosen. Polyandry is more comfortable for men, but they dislike it, because of their very narrow sights.
