I couldn't do it.

Rationally, it makes sense to save 1000 people over 1 person.

But (avoiding cheesy references to Star Trek 2) my kid trusts me, has faith in me, expects me to protect him, looks to me for wisdom and guidance, and so on.

The reason we all struggle with the question (besides our deep personal love for our kids) is that it would be a COMPLETE and UTTER violation of the parent/kid relationship to sacrifice a kid without their knowledge / against their will even for a "greater good."

There's an old religious "inspirational message" that went around, about a parent who sacrificed his kid to doctors so that the world could develop a vaccine against a terrible plague. The kid never knows what's going on, the kid never makes a choice, the parent just decides and sacrifices the kid as if he were raw material. (I found the story abhorrent and did not believe it properly described the actions of Jesus, as per Christianity... although that's what it was pretending to do. It was just evil.)

If my kid was old enough, and s/he understood the sacrifice, and CHOSE to do it willingly... that's very different (and is the scenario of Jesus). Even in that case, I would rather take their place than let them go through with it themselves, if at all possible... and it would kill me to not be able to.

But this sort of scenario? I couldn't. My kid was entrusted to me; I have to preserve that trust; to break it is a violation of everything that is right and good in the world.

Someone else who knows these strangers (and is thus in a trusting sort of relationship with them) will have to make the choice to sacrifice themselves.

I know of no strangers on this planet. We are all brothers and sisters. My child is no more or less mine than she is yours. If I can save all with my life, I would give it. In the end, it's the only decision about life and death we should have.

It would not advise that killing is okay in God's eyes with the aid of fact he did no longer have him kill it. i think of the tale became to verify whether or no longer Abraham had blind faith in God. i've got self belief the tale is enormously lots asserting have self belief and each thing would be ok. no longer unavoidably faith in God, yet faith usually. those are all basically thoughts in spite of each thing. whether at one factor they have been actual after the quantity of time that has long handed by ability of and the translations they went with the aid of it particularly is basically stunning that they might look a sprint ridiculous below the thought those thoughts are precisely what got here approximately. with the objective to end my answer i've got self belief that the tale is basically that...a narrative...and that it is going to likely be interpreted even however you like, yet I doubt that it became meant to be interpreted as killing is okay if God says so. i'm hoping i'd desire to help.

No, No, and No. It would be nice to say yes, but I am not feeling that nice today, or any day which would threaten the life of my child(ren). Why would you give up your flesh and blood for a bunch of *ssholes anyway?

Who are we to take any lives, that of our children or strangers, to take one life is no better than to take 1,000,0000 lives. So I would refuse to take any lives, I may sacrifice myself, and even that may be immoral at its face.
