A friend of mine lived in Singapore for a while. It's smaller than Toronto (about a third of the size) In Singapore there's 2 types of weather, hot and really hot. There are plenty of shopping malls, and shipyards there, (shipping being their main industry there). Most of the population's cultural background's from the Asian mainland.
There's several laws that are different from ours. Chewing gum is illegal even in private, for littering there is a large fine. Murder and pointing a gun at a police officer is punished by hanging. Singapore is pretty clean and the crime rate is low. I THINK that traffic is a problem there but I'm not too sure. Housing and cars are very expensive there.
A bridge connects Singapore to the mainland (Malaysia). The government in singapore is debt-free and stores more money each year. The main industry in Singapore is shipping. Relations with Malaysia are tense and food is mostly imported.
Hope that helps

A foreigner living in Singapore will find it a fast-paced, food loving, transport efficient, humid, crowded city.
Working there as an expatriate can be rather stressful, given that the Singaporean counterparts almost always work overtime and are generally competitive.
I think rental is a much better option and buying one. First, foreigners can only buy second-hand houses and that process is very very competitive. If you are into luxury, rent a condominium apartment. If you are into economy, seek out big housing estates like Ang Mo Kio, Marine Parade, and Choa Chu Kang.
Singapore is a country where you see 3 unique and major races (Chinese, Malays, Indians), students of all ages, military and business people all sharing public transport and eating in the same places.
But they are not the type where you can strike a conversation in the street. In defence, they are usually willing to lend a helping hand when people ask for directions or advice on where to eat and buy things.

It's a wonderful cosmopolitan island city which is also extremely safe and very very clean.
All the amenities that you're used to back home can be bought there and everyone speaks English (and hence easy to get around) although there're 4 national languages.
Property is extremely expensive, e.g. US$200,000 for a very small 2 bedroom apartment that has a living room and a kitchen. And this is the price of a government-owned apartment!!! Cars are about that price too due to the high taxes!
However, "non-luxury" items, i.e. necessities, are cheaper than most developed countries. Examples of such items include staples (rich, potatoes, pasta...), transportation (bus, subway, taxis... but NOT cars) and items required for daily living.

Ive worked in Singapore many times, but not resided there. Its a very safe place to live with little crime. However, the cost of living is extremely high (cars, houses etc,). It is a cosmopolitan country which caters for everyone. It is quite small so there is nowhere really to go to get away from things. Saying that you are very close to Malaysia and Indonesia for exploring.

My ex-girlfriend was a Singaporean and a real *****. Probably I can't give you an un-biased opinion. My general view is living in Singapore may not be that hard, but people are too materialistic and self-centered.
