My mobile is as dead as my head at the moment but if my memory serves me correctly you go to contact list, pick your name and go to edit, and scroll down to ringtone in edit options.
There can only be two ways, the way I said above or via the ringtones and then choose recipient for the tone.
I have many different tones set for different people and another for texting and yet another for Multimedia service

oki hopefully this will work...dats how i do it...

1. record da "ringtone" u wish 2 have on voice memo
2. check if it sounds good, etc.
3. save da voice memo
4. go 2 messages & create a new pic message
5. destination 4 da message is ur own cell # & DO NOT insert a pic in2 da message
6. insert sound, then pick dat its from voice memo or my melody or preloaded *i figured u'd b creative & use voice memo*
7. then simply send da message
8. u right away retrieve dat message & then go 2 options & save sound
9. finally, go 2 ur contacts & add ringer ID in2 dat contact's info

*i started up w/ voice memo in case u didnt want those prelaoded ringers or music tones...*
