Ideographs are the characters used in the Chinese language.

As a result of Confucian ideals, women were confined to the inner quarters of the home. A way to keep them at home was footbinding. This is a process when a girl from 4-6 years old had her mother crush her toes or bend her toes over (pretty much mutilating her feet) so that it could be small. The ideal length was 3" and was often called the 3" lotus. Binding feet supposedly gave women more status because it either could let her marry into a wealthier family or it showed that the family was rich that they did not need her labor in the fields. Antifootbinding societies did not come until the late 1800s when missionaries came to China. Despite the missionaries, women continued to bind their feet. It was not until the Communists took over in 1949 did the practice of footbinding stop.

When the Communists came over, they gave women freedom to carry posts, but there was still discrimination with women because of their double duties as mother and comrade. In fact with Communists coming to power, Mao encouraged women to bear many children (hence the population problem China faces today). Moreover, women were allowed to be educated.

Up until about 1900, and even into the 1930s in Yunnan Provence, women's feet were broken above the toes and folded beneath the arch. This was held in place by binding. It caused agony all their lives. Does that answer your question?
