I was watching something on TV. One of the characters had never tried drugs and did not understand why people would take them. It was explained that drugs make people feel good, give them a sense of power, etc.

Anyway, the character said "but those feelings are artificial, it does not make sense to continue those activities"

My question is: just because something is "artificial" is that a valid reason to stop doing the action that feels good?

EXAMPLES:
-Masterbation
-watching ANYTHING on TV or MOVIES is an artificial experience
-reading books
-daydreaming

the way i see it, anything you feel is just as real as anything else. i'm just not sure if everything is either real, or artificial. but, assuming that ANYTHING is "real", then even a person hallucinating something that noone else sees is having a "real" feeling. anyone who believes "i think, therefore i am" should agree with me.

Good point.

Almost everything we have could be considered artificial.

We have created so many things to make life more enjoyable.

The wisest thing is do consider what is to our long term benefit. Some things feel good, but are bad for us in the long run, for example eating too much food high in fat and sugar.

I think the heart of the problem may be that some feelings are easier to get artificially. Yet the use of artificial means may make it harder to enjoy the natural feelings. That becomes a viscous circle.

I don't think artificial automatically means bad.

~If you misunderstand the concept to the extent that your examples seem to indicate, I do not recommend that you read books beyond the level of "See Spot Dick Jane and Sally". Movies and TV may a little advanced too. Best to sit in the corner and daydream while you masturbate.

I think as long as something makes you happy, it doesnt hurt anyone and its not illegal then you can do it all you want. Just take care of yourself though.
