These small groups walk around as they sing traditional ballads,

a large guitar called a guitarón, and often a trumpet. What are these
musical groups called?

Sounds like mariachi bands. They often accompany a singer who does a serenage for a lady outside her window, but in this day and age, they can also play alone. Maybe a native Spanish speaker can correct this if I'm wrong, since it's pretty late right now.
