In a way, both. The character you saw on Justice League is the Fawcett Comics creation known as Captain Marvel. He gains his powers by yelling "Shazam!", which is also the name of the wizard who bestowed these powers upon him. DC bought the rights to the character in the 70s, after the character was outselling Superman in the 40s, resulting in DC filing lawsuit against Fawcett for copyright infringement (they said the two characters looked too similar). DC won on appeal. This Captain Marvel appears in Shazam! comics.

Marvel has had several characters named Captain Marvel. The first & most famous was Mar-Vell of the Kree Empire. He was introduced during the 60s, & used Kree Nega-Bands to grant him great powers. This Captain Marvel is deceased. Others who have bore this title are Ms. Marvel Carol Danvers (at least in the Ultimates universe), Pulsar (who was also known as Photon until the third Captain Marvel wanted to take this name), Genis-Vell (the genetically-engineered son of Mar-Vell, who has also been known as Photon, & is now deceased), & most recently Phyla-Vell (Genis' sister, who may also be deceased). Marvel has said a new Captain Marvel may emerge soon, perhaps during the events of Civil War. For more information, try the links below. I recommend doing a search for Captain Marvel on Wikipedia, as this will give you loads of information.

Captain Marvel Vs Captain Marvel

I grew up a Marvel kid. One of my best friends was a DC kid. We always had arguments of "Who would win in a fight" and so on. We would always try to get the other to read our comics. While I did like some of the DC heroes, Marvel was still my poison. Now as an adult, I'm more interested in the iconic heroes of the DC Universe. Because I look back at Marvel...and over the years, there really hasn't been a whole lot of change. X-Men are still X-Men, Avengers are still Avengers... Marvel just reinvents things with stories like Civil War and Marvel Zombies (which are both fantastic, by the way). DC has actually changed with the times. Their heroes have had multiple identities. There's been several Green Lanterns, several Blue Beetles and several Flashes. Each of those characters have their own history, their own story, their own ties, motivations and connections. The only heroes who have been reinvented have been the DC Holy Trinity. (Superman, Batman and Wonder Woman). I think these changes really adds depth of the heroes.

DC. The name Marvel has nothing to do with the Marvel universe. And since when could superman beat up Captain Marvel? He always lost in the comics.

There is a Captain Marvel in both universe's Captain Marvel in DC is purely based in magic and is a little boy who when he says Shazam turns into captin marvel, while Marvel's one is an alien who was of cosmic nature. I think a kree. and was sent to earth as a spy. but turned into a hero to protected earth.

Is this is not good enough info ... check out Marvel. com and / or Dc.com or search google they have tons of stuff there.

Captain Marvel is a comic book superhero, originally published by Fawcett Comics and now owned by DC Comics. Created in 1939 by C.C. Beck and Bill Parker, the character first appeared in Whiz Comics #2 (Feb, 1940). With a premise that taps into adolescent fantasy, Captain Marvel is the alter ego of Billy Batson, a youth who works as a radio news reporter and was chosen to be a champion of good by the wizard Shazam. Whenever Billy speaks the wizard's name, he is instantly struck by a magic lightning bolt that transforms him into an adult Superman-like hero empowered with the abilities of six mythological figures. Several friends and family members, most notably Marvel Family cohorts Mary Marvel and Captain Marvel, Jr., can share Billy's power and become "Marvels" themselves.

Hailed as "The World's Mightiest Mortal" in his adventures (and nicknamed "The Big Red Cheese" by archvillain Doctor Sivana, an epithet adopted by fans as a nickname for their hero), Captain Marvel was, based on sales, the most popular superhero of the 1940s. The Captain Marvel Adventures series sold more copies during the mid-1940s than Superman and other competing superhero books. Captain Marvel was also the first superhero to be adapted into film in 1941 (The Adventures of Captain Marvel). Fawcett ceased publishing Captain Marvel and Marvel Family comics in 1953. This was due to both a general decline in the popularity of superheroes and a copyright infringement suit from DC Comics alleging that Captain Marvel was an illegal infringment of Superman. DC licensed the Marvel Family characters and returned them to publication in 1972, and acquired all rights to the characters in 1980. Captain Marvel and the Marvel Family have been integrated into the "DC Universe", and DC has attempted a few revivals. Despite their efforts, Captain Marvel has not regained widespread appeal with new generations, although a 1970s Shazam! live action television series featuring the character was very popular.

Due to the fact that Marvel Comics trademarked their Captain Marvel comic book during the interim between the original Captain Marvel's Fawcett years and DC years, DC Comics is unable to promote and market their Captain Marvel/Marvel Family properties under that name. Since 1972, DC has instead used the trademark Shazam! as the title of their comic books and thus the name under which they market and promote the character. As a result, Captain Marvel himself is sometimes erroneously referred to as "Shazam".
