Tell me things like:
Who's going to win matchups at certain positions.
How will Dallas contest Shaq in the paint.
How will Miami off-set Dallas' quickness
What other factors (home court advantage, coaches, etc) will affect the series out-come

I'm going to look at this from a depth/matchup stand point. EVEN if Shaq is a force of nature, that still won't matter because Tim Duncan was a force of nature and Mavs still beat them. Mavs can play many styles of basketball...but I think Avery is going to make Dallas play the style they used against the Spurs...run and quick shots. Devin Harris will be a key in running the ball down the court which will one take Shaq out of the game and get him tired, and two create match up problems due to transition defense. Dirk Nowitzki is going to be double teamed almost every time, Josh Howard is better then Walker or James Posey, Terry is better then Williams. If the Heat want to win, then Dwayne Wade is going to have to not only shoot well, but somehow get others involved. Where Detroit didn't have a bench, the Mavericks have Stackhouse, Van Horn, Daniels, Harris, and sometimes Darrel Armstrong. Miami has a veteran bench, but might cost them if Dallas goes to a run and gun offense. So heres how I look at it..

PG:
Harris/Terry > Williams

SG:
Terry/Griffin < Dwayne Wade

SF:
Josh Howard > James Posey or anyone else

PF:
Dirk > Walker

C:
Diop/Dampier < Shaq (Or maybe they might do a decent job after all)

Bench:
Mavs > Heat

Therefore, I conclude that the Mavs would win in 6

Dallas' defense is fantastic, shutting down teams in the 4th quarter the way Detroit does. Advantage Dallas with the D.

Offense : Nowitzki is a one man scoring machine. Miami have Wade and Shaq and a core of role players who can score. Walker, Williams, Payton. Can they overcome Dallas' team D? Probably yes.

Guards : Wade and Payton/Williams are a great core. Dallas' Terry and Harris are potent too. Almost even here. But slight advantage to Miami cos they have Wade.

Forwards : Nowitzki is superior to any F that Miami has. He'll destroy Miami's front court given a half chance. Advantage Dallas.

Bigs : Miami have Shaq. Dallas have Dampier and Diop. Miami also have Mourning. Umm yeah...advantage Miami.

Overall : Almost even. But if Miami can limit Nowitzki and Wade and Shaq produce, you have to like Miami's chances. That said, Dallas are a powerhouse team. This will be a good series.

If you look at history Dallas should win because:

1. Home court advantage teams have won the finals 15 of the last 20 finals

2. The western conference has won it 5 of the last 6 years, and if you exclude the Michael Jordan Bulls teams, only one other team has won it from the eastern conference in the last 20 years (Detroit Pistons, 88,89, and 04).

3. Another factor is that usually the team that beats the MVP which dallas did to steve nash and phoenix usually go onto win the finals...
case in point:
2005: Steve Nash lost to San Antonio
2002: Tim Duncan lost to Los Angeles Lakers
2001: Allen Iverson lost to Los Angeles Lakers
1997: Karl Malone lost to Chicago bulls
1995: David Robinson lost Houston Rockets
1993: Charles Barkley lost to Chicago Bulls
1989: Magic Johnson lost to Detroit Pistons

4. Since ABC/ESPN have taken over the NBA, Shaquille O'Neal has not won the world championship

5. Miami got swept convincingly by the Mavericks this year.

but who knows, i picked the pistons and the spurs to go back. so miami has just as good a chance as the Steelers and the White Sox did.

Home court plays a big part with these teams so I go with the Mavs in 7. The Mavs are depth and can throw a bunch of bodies at Shack and Josh Howard can slow down Wade evryone else match up equally.

Dallas will win (Mavs in 5) because of their committment to defense, their versatility in offense, deep bench, a talented coach, and certain German by the name of Nowitzki. Dallas has the advantage at PF (Nowitzki), SF (Howard) and PG (Terry).

Sounds like your question will take too long to answer, so instead of wasting your time with junk, I will just say the Mavs with beat the Heat in 6 games, because of better defense.

mavs will have the home court advantage
82 % of the time the home team wins
