Forget the lessons and save some money. Get him a drum set and let him learn on his own. Let him use headphones while playing along with the tunes.............................................................

He needs lessons and structure to learn. Banging around won't help. Don't buy a drum set. Get a small electronc drum thingy. Get a good teacher (you can take lessons at most music or drum stores). Our newspapers also have ads for drum lessons. Then after your son proves he will practice and stick with it then consider the drum set. The teachers usually will know of a good one for sale and be able to recommend. But right now it may just be a fantasy. make sure it's a reality before you buy anything really expensive. And make him earn a lot of the money, too. by doing chores. make him work for what he wants.

my 11 year old son takes drum lessons. first off, find a good teacher. check with your local music store to see if they have lessons. they will probably be $10-15 per 1/2 hour session. you don't need to buy drum kit right off. just a snare drum. this is what he will start out on in his lessons. if money is an issue, you could even buy a drum pad. it's quieter than a snare drum. it would be fine to get a used snare and even a used drum kit. new ones can be quite expensive. i paid $500 for my son's 5 piece kit, throne, cymbals, sticks, etc. and it's an off brand, not pearl or anything like that. i would just hold off on the whole kit until your son really makes a commitment to the drums. ebay would be a good place to look for drums. good luck!!

Depending where you live, put him into football training with the nearest team. If he is already in one, and is quite good at playing football try find a big club near you (such as a team in Barclays Premier League, Championship, SPL etc..) and see if he can join the youth squad if he keeps up, and is a good player by the time he is 16-18 he could play for the actual team. But all this depends on how good he is at football.

First of all, invest in some soundproofing. :-)

Here's a nice getting started site:

Get a pair of sticks and a practice pad. If you can't get him private lessons, check with your school for any beginning band courses. Before he attacks a full drum kit, he should demonstrate some rudimentary basics. Timing is key.
Support from you is also important.

drum sticks are about 5-10$...

drum kit - you can get a pretty okay starter kit for about 300$

lessons - i never had any, i just copied my fav drummers and attempted to get my own style which i obtained, and i just was allowed to bang around by myself, and well.... i have been told that im good enough to be teaching advanced lessons, and i have sessioned as a drummer in a recording studio.... so well... lessons are most certainly NOT a requirement, they are both overrated and very expensive.

but if you want a good teacher, enquire through a reputable musical instrument store, they have contact details!

get some drum sticks (cost about $5.) get him a cheap drum, don't invest in a drum set till you're sure he's going to stick with it. lots of boys say they want to play guitar, end up selling it after a few months cuz they lose interest.

Yeah why not?

Save for a drum kit and let him bang around.

You might have a famous drum player in the making

Look into your middle school band program. He will learn how to read music, play, get performing experience, and exposure to a lot of different types of music. The instruction is free and will give him new friends and goals. The band director will tell you what he needs to start. Many music stores have programs that allow you to purchase equipment on a plan.

And as his ability grows and he merits it you can purchase expanded equipment.

Band was the best thing about school for me.
