Yes I was in the Navy at that time and it made me mad as hell that we didn't do anything. We actually had good relations with the Shah of Iran until Ayatollah Khoheimi took over the country and the radical students stormed the embassy taking Americans hostage for 444 days under the watch of Jimmy Carter. That was a major reason the terroists are the way they are today. Some believe that one of the leaders who stormed the embassy is Irans president today with the crazy last name. I think we should have ripped them to pieces back then.

Happened in 1979. It was when the Ayatollah Khomeini overthrew the government in Iran. Prior to that date we had good relations with that country. The Shah was here in the US getting cancer treatment I think when it happened. I was 9 at the time but I do remember that that was the time when the terrorist were gaining momentum. A lot of hijackings, kidnappings and bombings were going on at that time.

That was Carter's worst mistake and how the Regan revolution happened. Regan pretty much said if ellected he would invade Iran. He got elected and the hostages were released the day he took office. If not for that incident Carter might have carried a second term.

Pretty much that was the major sign of the huge flare up in the region which lead to our higher presence. The bombing in Beirut didn't help matters much either. Those were the days when the movements we are fighting today started to take shape.

How many remember when we armed the Shah's army in the 50's and had Iran's democratically elected president overthrown by a religious dictator that was US friendly? How many understand why Iranians would be kinda-sorta pissed off at Americans for running a brutal dictatorship through an American puppet religious dictator in their country for 20+ years?

History is full of cause-effect relationships, just remember that in the Middle East, people have LOOOOONG memories.

Well instead of having a real president the good old democratic party gave us a guy named Carter. He looked and talked like a president but was so busy being a goodie two shoes that he could not defend those people in our embassy. His inability to organize a rescue effort kept our citizens imprisoned in the embassy for 444 days. Just like his left wing cousin Clinton, he could not get the support of our military in planning a good mission. Now both those losers are hero's to the left wing and the dummycrats are looking for a new Savior in Hillary. If Reagan had run for office against Carter there would not have been the problem. He gave them an offer they could not refuse and Americans were released immediately after he took office.

I was 20. The dumb bastards overtook the embassy and took 149? of our people hostage for nearly 2 years. The shah recently exiled to the United States and it pissed a few of them off. A rescue attempt failed during the Carter Administration but shortly after Reagan was elected, they were released.

What was really funny was when the Ayatollha died, the fanatic bastards dropped his body right out of the coffin during his funeral!
