Many subscribe to the tried and true method of taking classes. However I believe that you should familiarize yourself with as many tunes as possible. Get a practice chanter and work at playing something you've known your whole life such as "amazing grace". A familiar tune is easier to learn and pickup. A practice chanter will cost $20-100 as opposed to $100-7000 for a full set of pipes.

Full pipes are great but remember that you don't need a Strativarious to learn to play the violin. Used pipes or well made starter pipes or even inexpensive practice pipes can get you started without blowing your entire budget.

A great piece of software is available that comes with about 700 tunes and uses real piping for it's sound - I think Mick Iian did the sound. Anyway
it allows you to hear the tune AS IT SHOULD sound first and shows you the finger positions. - You can buy it from http://www.mocroi.com

I also recommend their selection of tutorial books and cds

when i started playing i had to learn the practice chanter(a practice pipe.)i was on the chanter for about a year until i moved on.The Bagpipes are very hard to play but when you learn how to play the bagpipes they are fun.You have to practice at least an hour a day to be good at playing.i have been playing for about a year and a half and i love playing the Bagpipes.the best way to learn is to find the local Bagpipe bands near you.i play in a local band.when i wanted to learn how to play i didn't know where to look so i went on the computer and looked up local people that played for years.and now i am playing for a pipe band.i hope you find someone to teach you.Good luck

I, for one, and delighted to hear of people wanting to learn the bagpipes. There is something so moving, so solemn about their sound. It's nice that these kinds of traditions continue.

I have seen bagpipe tutorials and cds available on eBay - maybe you could find something there.

go visit a local group and see if any one there will teach you or recommend someone. the closer to home you do it the easier it will be...plus the more hands on personal instruction you receive the better it will stick. and you will find out if you are really cut out for it...it takes a lot of wind!

First, WHY would you want to go doing something like that when there are people homeless and starving in every major city in this great rich nation in which we exist?

I don't know. But when you practice, practice far away from where people live.

Far, far away.
