I was watching ESPN when it occurred to me - the Red Sox and Yankees are successful, so why couldn't it work any place else? I know, I know... It's like, why do we need other surely lesser teams around when every last person on earth is already in love with Boston and New York? I guess it was a novel idea. But when I found out last week that there are people actually living to the west of Pennsylvania, my imagination took off. One time, I heard about these places called Chicago and Los Angeles and I think they're part of the U.S. too...so is, like, four or five other big cities and states.

Hate to be so blunt, but really nobody, save a very small group of people in Chicago, cared.

Yeah, I'm so over that rivalry. I've been a fan of the Atlanta Braves for 22 years now and all ESPN ever says about our fans is that we don't stick by our team (which isn't true if they'd bother to find out). I live out west now and this entire coast probably gets a minute of coverage. The only time the Pacific Northwest blipped on their radar was when the Hawks got killed in the SuperBowl.

I don't accept all this bullshit about the Red Sox and Yankees being the biggest rivals. Any true and knowledgeable baseball fan will tell you that the Dodgers/Giants rivalry is the biggest. (1) In order to be rivals, both teams have to be more or less even in their past. Yankees have totally dominated the Red Sox thoroughly. The media is at fault for these two teams' modern popularity. On the other hand, Dodgers/Giants are head to head in their past and have had worst brawls than the Yankees/Red Sox have had. Dodgers/Giants rivalry goes back since the eighteen hundreds.

Do you mean- financially successful? It seems most people love the Red Sox or Yankees, but they get the most coverage because of their history and prestige. The Cubs are pretty close in that regard, but as another answerer stated- the White Sox won it all last year. ESPN panders to the bigshots, follows the money- you can watch them for scores but forget about team play. They show highlight reels and worship Barry Bonds. I say that because they are giving him all this attention when he wasn't even chasing a home run record. He was chasing 2nd place in homeruns!!!

I care!! There are more than just two teams in MLB, it's just that the Yankees are so great that they show them on TV alot, and I really don't know why they show the Red Sox at all...WHO CARES, ABOUT THE RED SOX...I sure don't!! But , as for the Yankees, you hear about them alot because they are the best team in baseball...not the Red Sox, not the Tigers, not the Blue Jays, not the Braves, IT'S ALWAYS BEEN THE YANKEES!!!

I feel your pain. In 2002, my beloved Anaheim Angels won the World Series and nobody east of Nevada cared! The sad part is that it was a great series between the Giants and the Angels. I have been not only an Angel fan for 36 years but also a pure baseball fan. It was a dramatic series that went all 7 games and anyone who decided to tune out was cheated out of a great series! Those who didnt bother to watch are not true "baseball" fans!

Yankees and Red Sox have the biggest payrolls in Baseball, They also have the largest fan base. And finally, they share the greatest rivalry in sports history. These 3 factors make the 2 teams extremely "media friendly"...
...even though the YANKEES SUCK!

East Coast Biased is so pathetic. ESPNis a great channel, and sports center is my favorite show, but the hang up on the NY teams like the Yankees is ridiculous. Albert Pujols and the Cardinals are great, and they should get more respect in the baseball world. I guess winning 9 world championships is not enough to get you 2 minutes a night on ESPN.
ESPN heaqquarters id in Bristol, Conn. and many of the employees are from NY, so there is your east coast biased.

why? you ask why? because NY fans and Boston fans really care deeply about their teams. And they will not accept mediocrity. Unlike fans on the North side who fill Wrigley year after year thereby providing WGN with no economic incentive to get a winning team.
Also fans living east of ST.Louis and North of I-40 [i'll include Atlanta} and south of Canada know what thier watching.
To the Fans of the teams living in the above described geographical area baseball is a way of life and the tie that binds.

The media loves to hype up the yanks and the sawks because it keeps viewers interested. I live in Chicago and Im a big white sox fan and its just something I have learned to deal with. When ever I want to talk or learn about my favorite teams I look for message boards and forums.
