I'd like to know primarily how the movie changed it. Is the original story much more involved or very different?

God, the Pheonix was totally ruined in the movie. the Pheonix is the gaurdian for the Shi'ar crystal. It's a crystal in another galaxy that has something to do with creation. (sorry, doing this from memory) The Xmen ended up going over to the shi'ar empire following Scott Summers dad and the Star jammers. The pheonix had to choose a body to inhabit in order to fix everything in the galaxy. Problem is, when the pheonix inhabits a body, everything increases, including the lust for power and destruction. This is how the Dark Pheonix became. After Scott and the xmen help Jean regain control, she tries to kill the Pheonix by going into a star. well this failed and she ended up back on Earth with the Pheonix powers laying dormant. After progressions, Pheonix came back in spouts, but Jean has been able to incorporate pheonix's powers with her own so she can rival X's mental powers. Howzat?

yea..the movie messed it up, but jean grey is pheonix, unless you think she's the new mutant, excalibur phoenix......there's about 15 20? yrs of plot there.
