The original name for Rooster was C*ck. This was not a bad word at the time, it was simply what a rooster was.

Roosters are known for their strutting around looking like a proud man, so eventually, men who acted proud became known as C*cks.

Later, the world began to realize that every single man on earth is like a proud rooster, and every single man on earth is led around by his penis.... so we all started calling the penis a c*ck.

They were originally called cocks. The source is Middle English cok, from Old English cocc, probably from Late Latin coccus, from coco, a cackling.

A rooster is something that roosts, hence the name.
