Hi! I'm going to Sapporo this August to watch some games of FIBA World Championship, but this will only be 3 days. I want to extend my trip to see other sites. Maybe some of you can give me tips, and advice regarding my visit to Sapporo, Japan? How is the weather this time of the year, the crowd, and all the places you would recommend for me to go to. :) Thank you in advance!:)

Sapporo is a city of about 1.8 million people, so I really wouldn't consider it to be part of the sticks. Since Hokkaido was the last part of Japan to be moved into, you're not going to find the "traditional" Japanese cultural spots like you would around Kyoto, Tokyo, etc. But, I don't think I'd want to live anywhere else in Japan (been here for close to 2 years).

A good starting point would be to check out the Sapporo city web site: http://www.welcome.city.sapporo.jp/english/ This site has travel info, weather info, what have you.

For food, you must try the Genghis Khan. The best place I've tried it at is the Kirin Beer Hall. http://r.gnavi.co.jp/fl/en/h024800/ All you can eat for 100 minutes for 2,100 yen. You can also get a 4 liter tower of Kirin if you wish.

The best place for ramen would be to go to the top floor of Esta, at the Sapporo station. There's a ramen food theme park that features 8 restaurants from around Hokkaido. http://www.sapporo-esta.jp/ramen/top.html

Now, if you really want to see Sapporo, go to the top of Mt. Moiwa http://www.sapporo-dc.co.jp/eng/moiwa/index.html That's one of my favorite places to go in Sapporo.

Hope this helps, and enjoy your visit!

Winter is the best time for Sapporo, but I guess in August you could visit any of the Ainu sights (similar to the American Indians), The Sapporo Beer garden is good too. It is a city famous for beer, ramen, butter, chocolate, potatoes and beef. The food is terriffic! Odori Park is another good place. Enjoy!

Hokkaido Historic Village
The Historic Village of Hokkaido (kaitaku no mura) is an open air museum in the suburbs of Sapporo. It exhibits about 60 typical buildings from all over Hokkaido, dating from the Meiji and Taisho Periods (1868 to 1926), the era when Hokkaido's development was carried out on a large scale.

Try the Shiroi koibito chocolates!
Shiroi Koibito Park is a kind of theme park by Ishiya, a local chocolate company. The company's flagship product are the Shiroi Koibito cookies, two thin butter cookies with white chocolate in between, a mandatory item on the souvenir shopping list of most visitors to Hokkaido.

Visit a sumo school. Some Ainu cultal sites would likely be interesting.

Its sort of in the sticks of Japan so may not be much to see. And since its not snowing, the big snow festivals (the big draw there) won't be happening.
