The number 666 is used to refer to the beast in the Bible's Book of Revelations:
"He also forced everyone, small and great, rich and poor, free and slave, to receive a mark on his right hand or on his forehead, so that no one could buy or sell unless he had the mark, which is the name of the beast or the number of his name. This calls for wisdom. If anyone has insight, let him calculate the number of the beast, for it is man's number. His number is 666."
Among many coincidences that occur with numbers, life itself is based partly on these three: Carbon atoms, key to life as we know it, have six protons, six neutrons, and six electrons in their most common form.
That there is concern over the date at all is a reflection of how popular it's become to search for the hidden meanings in numbers, experts say.
"People have a tendency to latch onto things, like numbers, that help them make sense of the world," said Mario Livio, an astrophysicist and author of "The Equation That Couldn't Be Solved"
Avoiding the number
The number 666 retains a peculiar significance in the culture and psychology of Western societies, where some perceive it as “the Devil’s number”, even in contexts usually remote from superstition. The fear of the number 666 is called hexakosioihexekontahexaphobia.
For example, when the CPU manufacturer Intel introduced the 666 MHz Pentium III in 1999, they chose to market it as the “Pentium III 667”, claiming that, since the actual clock speed was 666.666 MHz, 667 was the more accurate approximation, against their usual rounding practice, examples of which are the 66.666 MHz “486-66”, the 466.666 MHz “Celeron 466” and the later 866.666 MHz “Pentium III 866.”
U.S. Route 666, “the Highway of the Beast”, was renumbered as U.S. Route 491 in 2003 after controversy over the supposed reference to the Biblical beast, which also made the road signs a common target for theft.
June 6 2006 can be interpreted as "666": the sixth month, sixth day and the sixth year. The same is of course true of the same date in other years, such as 1006.

In Australia it's already 7.6.6 and as far as I know they're still here, so relax. We had a 6.6.6 a hundred years ago, and several more before that.
The 666 mentioned in Revelations refers to Emperor Nero. In Greek letters linked to numbers and that's how Nero worked out. He thought he was a God and killed anyone who wouldn't worship him, including Christians. The 666 in Revelations was a coded warning. "666 is the number of the beast and also a man. Those who are wise will know what I am saying". The writer couldn't say direclty that Nero was influenced by the devil because he would have been killed. Revelations goes on to say that some people have the mark of the beast on their foreheads. That's the people that worshipped Nero.
6.6.6 is part of the prediction of the world's end because it can't end until the man, the antichrist, has been, but that's happened. There are other things to think about now. No one can say when the world will end so there's not much point in worrying about it. Just carry on.

Wasn't this Nostradamus, end of the world prophecy discussed on TV years ago with the end being at the new millenium? What was that called again? Y2K or something and people were all wondering back then too that the world was ending. As they say, funny they can't see any future events in the Nostradamus prophecies but only discover his predictions after they happen. It's easy to predict things... all you need to do is look into past events. A plane will crash... there will be a huge destructive natural disaster... an evil leader will gain power. As to the end of the Mayan calender, that date given is only the end of some universal cycle and will be the beginning of a new one. Just like the end of any ordinary year, a new year will then begin. Mayans never talked about it being the end of the world, in fact I heard that that calendar goes past the year 3000. All your seeing on them History channel shows is the worst possible things man can imagine could happen. But if you think about it, what are the odds in universal time that we would be the ones to witness Armageddon or the end of the world?

Yes, it's the end of the world, but another just like it will appear the instant this one disappears. Did I say just like it? I meant almost like it. In the new world, chickens are the dominant life form and we are kept in tiny cages to be bred as chicken food. Have a nice day.

Its not a day, it is the number of a man. It could also be the number of a political system, like politically correct.
