On the same page as KeriGee, some of the people I consider family are in no way, shape, or form, related to me.
I'm 37. Once upon a time, I was in 11th grade English. I turned around and started talking to the girl behind me. We had dinner together on Saturday night. We went to Bible Study together last Wednesday. I consider her to be like a sister, along with another friend we met a couple of years after we graduated high school.
In 1998, I was matched with a 4 year old girl through a mentoring program. We've been to Disney World twice. The night before her 12th birthday, we went to a Mother/Daughter concert. (Her birthday happened to fall on Mother's Day this year) Her younger brother was born in 1999. He's also a very special person in my life.
I also have immediate family who live local to me, and also inlaws.

The word family is one which is very difficult, if not impossible to define. In one sense it means all persons related by blood or marriage; in another it means all the members of a household, including parents and children with perhaps other relations, lodger and even servants. But both these definitions are too wide.
Essentially, the family can be regarded as a basic social unit constituted by at least two people or more, whose relationship may fall into these three categories:
1. Husband and wife
2. Parents living with one or more children
3. brothers and sisters or other persons related by blood or marriage may be regarded forming family

My husband, myself, and our two beautiful babies. We love each other, we understand each other, and we love each other unconditionally. We are there for the good times and the bad times. We support each other and care for each other in sickness and in health. Yes, there are bumps on every road, but part of being a family is being able to get over those bumps and learn from them. A family encourages growth and education in each other. A family encourages doing what is right and forbidding what is wrong. A family teaches their children to love and respect all people, regardless of religion or ethnicity. BTW, this family is islamic.

A family is a group of people who care for one another, who love one another, provide a place of safety and security. Families can be any size, and it doesn't matter if there is a husband and wife, or two same sex partners, or a Granparent. Family is more than blood relation.

In addition to blood relatives.....family is what you make it. A family can consist of your relatives, spouse, children, and friends. I have a friend whom I consider my family, and she is included in all of my family functions.
