Don't think of him as a male. Think of him as a doctor. There will also be a female in the room while he does the exam. If not, ask for one. Then there's always the "count the tiles on the ceiling", count the specks on the wall, or just plain think about something else. Like vacation plans or what you're going to wear tomorrow. Just relax and it will be over before you know it.

Just relax. The doctor should be very professional and he should make you feel at ease. There should also be a nurse in the room with you. During the physical they will have a casual conversation with you to try to keep you from thinking about the physical.

I had a physical with a female doctor (I'm male obviously) and it was alright. It was either that or wait longer. I would reschedule it if you could.
Most gynocologists are male anyway. I think that would be worse, but I don't have any experience there. It will probably be pretty fast.....just think the doctor does hundreds of those a day.

If you can, ask for a female doctor. If not, it will be fine. When a male doctor checks you, he must have a female nurse there to witness the checkup. It will be done professionally and there won't be any embarrassment. Don't be shy, this will happen many more times in your lifetime.

If a male doctor is going to do any type of pelvic exam a female doctor HAS to be in the room by law, so hopefully that should help ease your mind a little.

switch to a female doctor, either way a physical is still awkward no matter what. We have all been there. Try to relax, focus on a picture in the room or something. (that helped me the first time0

I don't care too much for the male doctors either, as the above poster said just make sure there's a nurse in there too, should be.

My mom always came in the room with me during my exam. It made me feel safer to have her near by. If you don't want her to come with you, do make sure there is a female nurse present for your safety.

Hmmm...I made sure my doctor is a chick...I don't care to have a dude poking and prodding me if I can help it.
Reshedule with a woman doctor. Tell your mom it's *ahem* 'that time of the month'...
