There are many reasons for this. As its been said before, they are the oldest, they have been through more, and their responsibility level is higher. For example, I expect much more from my oldest niece than her two younger siblings. I expect her to help with the laundry, dishes, and marshalling her siblings when cleaning their rooms. Just a short list detailing her many responsibilities. Because they are the eldest, we tend to expect more of them because there is the contrast between them and their younger counterparts. They appear stronger because, in comparison to the younger ones, they are. Granted this is not always the case. When my youngest niece (age 6 at the time) broke her arm, she was admirable in her dealing with the pain and situation. Her older sister (my oldest niece) however, completely crumbled. I suppose it depends on the individuals. Anyway, hope this helped!

because he's expected to act as a surrogate parent. In fact, what often ends up happening is that it goes to the eldest child's head, making her a tyrant.

but apart from expectations manifesting themselves in reality, there's no basis for the assertion.
