This is in interesting question. I am 24, from south of Boston, and have been a Red Sox fan my whole life. Clearly I hate Jeter, but my initial thought was that Jeter is definitely better. After looking at the stats though, it is actually very close.

Here's how it works. The only 2 common offensive stats that actually mean anything are on base percentage, and slugging percentage (and on base percentage is about 3 times more important). Other stats that are meaningful include number of strike outs per plate appearance and number of pitches seen per at bat.

With those stats, you can actually accurately predict how many runs a team will score in a season.

With that in mind, here's the breakdown.
Nomar's career OBP = .369
Jeter's career OBP = .387
Nomar's OBP this season = .429
Jeter's OBP this season = .426
Nomar's career SLG = .547
Jeter's career SLG = .462
Nomar's SLG this season = .621
Jeter's SLG this season = .477

Over the course of his career, Nomar has struck out once every 9.98 at bats.
Over the course of his career, Jeter has struck out once every 5.64 at bats.

It is a well known fact that Nomar frequently swings at the first pitch.
It is a well known fact that Jeter sees a high number of average pitches per at bat.

As for fielding stats, those are much harder to determine, but it has been proven that fielding abilities are much less responsible to overall contribution than offensive abilities. Still is should be noted that both players have about the same range and that Jeter has a higher fielding percentage than Nomar does. Nomar is now a 1st baseman though and is an above average defensive 1st baseman.

So, based on that breakdown
Jeter has a slight edge in OBP.
Nomar has a distinct advantage in SLG.
Jeter has a notable advantage in pitches seen per at bat.
Nomar has a notable advantage in ratio of strike outs per at bat.
Jeter has a slight defensive advantage at SS.

With all that said, it seems that the large difference in SLG may actually prove that Nomar is the better player...which very much surprises me to write. The numbers don't lie though.

Again, even though the whole world of baseball is in love with stats like batting average and number of saves and other circumstancial stats, those numbers are basically meaningless.

Here we go again, im gonna go off on my sports tangent.
Well jeter, for a couple simple reasons. Jeter is one of the most well know sports heroes in yankees history, and thats saying a lot. Ill give Nomar his props but jeter is the king and captain of my Ney York Yankees. Here are the simple reasons Why jeter is better

1. Jeter is the best clutch hitter out there now, i dont care what people say about the Big Papi's, or the Manny Ramirez's, jeter always seem to be at bat when the games on the line, and he always seems to make the big plays.

2. Jeter is a team player on and off the field, he never yells at any of his teamates, on the field. Also i dont know if anyone remember's but Jeter was Robinson Cano's mentor last year, And look at Cano now, Most likely going to his first All-star game, and not as a spectator, but as a starter.

3. Jeter plays in the hardest place, other than philadelphia (They dont even like Santa) and he thrives there.

4. Lastly, he is just a likeable guy

no offense to you nomar, but Jeter has you beat on all cylinders, better luck next time.

I think that nomar is a better player because he has shown that he is very athletic. He can play almost any position and still be good.
