To begin with congrats! I have nine children so I've have used both...to begin with I didn't know about midwifes....I had 6 in hospitals with OB's in birthing room's with no meds....being waited on in the hospital was nice. I used a Mid wife for the last 3 because they are more laid back, and don't seem to panic over things a doctor does...for no reason...i can give details if you need them. I even studied to become a midwife for a time, and helped deliver my first grandchild....What really matters is the confidence of the mother to be.....you have to be comfortable with whomever you chose, they don't call it labor for nothing...and having the right people around you *or no one at all around you* makes all the difference in the world.
Douala's have less medical training I believe, you can google Doula and get all the details you need...they are more like a labor coach than a midwife, they are nearly always allowed in the hospitals under the supervision of your Ob.

I had an OB for both my pregnancies, as I had unrelated health problems that did not allow for a midwife to care for me. I think that in an uncomplicated pregnancy, a midwife would be great. Every woman is different so as to what style of support you'd be best suited for is completely up to you. I have no experience with a doula (my husband was my birthing partner) but for women who are single or just don't have adequate support, a doula would be a great option. Congrats and good luck!

I had an OB! But I had very complicated pregnancies! I was hospitalized most the time with 3 of my 4. I guess with my pregnancy experiences I would never trust a midwife, but maybe if I did not have complicated pregnancies!

I had a c-section so i had both a midwife and a OB? I liked having both as the OB had the medical approach while the midwife saw it more through my eyes and knew what i was going through a little bit more!

I had an OB. He was super nice and I could call him for anything (even in the middle of the night). He always answered my questions and when I developed pre-eclampsia he got me in the hospital right away. I now have a beautiful, healthy little girl.
