anyone can buy any clothes. It doesn't seem any better to judge someone by how they are dressed in an interview than their skin color. And it's infuriating to be told someone won't even talk to me if I don't wear the right shoes.

People might be partly right. I don't have any respect for people who think they can tell anything about someon's job performance by what they look like. Especially the clothes they wear.
And yes, people who value money over ethics will get that job, and it might be what employers are looking for.

I do take a lot of pride in how I look. That is why I refuse to look like the idiots who won't hire me if my hair is blue, or if I don't wear the right shoes. I look far better than those people to me. And I'm not one to make myself look like a totall idiot to get a job.

Unfortunately, a lot of customers have prejudices, and businesses have to hire people who will make the customers feel comfortable. If an 80-year-old lady is afraid of the cashier, chances are good she won't return to the store.
That being said, I think dressing professionally (or within the dress-code standards) shows your employer a level of respect. When you are at work, you are representing the company- NOT yourself. You have 16 hours a day to express your individuality, and only eight hours to represent the company, so it shouldn't be that difficult to put your creativity aside. And if the dress code REALLY bothers you, start your own business and work for yourself.

Having decent dress at an interview shows you value the opportunity you are being given. It shows that you "get it", that there is a difference between being on the job, and just hangin' out with friends.
When submitting an application, dressing nicely shows you are serious and are planning and preparing to work, rather than just stopping by.
And every job has a dress code. If I showed up looking for a job at a tattoo parlour wearing my grey suit, white collared shirt, and blue tie, I would be laughed out of the place, given no respect, even if was I a top tatoo artist.

Truthfully and even though it really sucks, appearance is a big portion of what employers use to judge a potential employee. Most of them are looking for someone who can appear neat. If you can present a professional and polished look during the interview then you seem as if you are professional and polished person.

We live in a world now days where looks are everything, or at least to some people. If you chew gum at your interview, that's tacky. They dint want to see that in your mouth, Because if your appearance is nice, neat, that means you take pride in yourself, that will affect how your job performance will be. Are you a people person! So to be hon nest to yourself if it is worth the job then you do what it takes

It shows a respect to company you are interviewing with. If you do not care enough to dress for interview - not Polo but neat - you will not care about type of job you do. Others want job enough to dress neatly.

Interviews have become a ritual.....forms and more forms, computer based evaluations as to how you answer and then finally, if you make seeing a human being, then they are interested in seeing if you match the computer diagram they have of you.....
