Back in the old days THE Big Three built tanks with lots of steel and weight in their cars if one was wrecked all one had to do was " splash a dash of water over the Instument Panel (correct term in the Auto Industry for this piece of the car) and then roll it out for resale

Yes, it was once called interchangeably a splash or dash board.. and on old carrages it was a panel designed to stop the outside elements (water puddles, rain, dirt) from splashing up on the cabin's occupants. As carriages turned into cars, and cars evolved, the location of the dashboard (as well as its function) has changed, but the etymology of the word remains the same.

In the old days, different parts of the auto were called "dashboards," because they dashed (threw) water and mud to one side. Eventually, it assumed its modern meaning.
