Gills function similar to our lungs but only operate properly in the water. They extract the oxygen from the water instead of from the air. Some fish have what is known as a labybrinth organ which allows them to breathe air like we do, such as the betta splendens or the common two spot gourami. These fish can often be seen going to the top of the water surface to "gulp" the air. These fish have adapted to water conditions with a low oxygen rate.

The fish has, as you know, gills.........amazingly water is filtered back to the lake and the air is sent on through the fishes lungs. I'd like that.............I would never fear drowning......
