Marilyn seemed to be very ill for a couple of days.........He's about a year old, and there were no dietary changes. He's fine now....could it be the litter I am using? I switched from recycled paper to a woodchip style, as his urine was EXTREMELY strong, and the paper style wasn't absorbing the odor. Thoughts?

And before anyone asks, he's named Marilyn after Marilyn Manson.

Thanks for all the great answers; I appreciate it.

Now how am I going to pick "best answer?"

I hope the wood shavings you are using are pine or aspen wood. Cedar releases irritating fumes when combined with urine, and can lead to respiratory probs.Aspen wood is a good alternative because it's relatively dust free, but it is a bit more expensive.Pine is cheaper, but more dusty and can irritate their eyes.

Marilyn should be back on the paper litter, any wood chip product is inferior. Specifically pine and cedar are very bad, but you should avoid wood altogether.

A rat's cage should be spot cleaned (wet litter, any raisins removed) every day, with a thorough cleaning at least once a week. I have 14 rats in one cage, I spot clean several times a day and psycho clean twice a week. ( my rats also only get bottled water)

Marilyn should also have a friend, but you should visit http://www.goosemoose.com for more information.

id call a pet store before a vet. they usually have just as much knowledge as they deal with those animals everyday. Good Luck, Marilyn.

I would say that Marilyn has been smoking too much. He should probably cut down on the caffeine too.

Maybe he just has a cold. If needed, there are antibiotics for our rodent friends. Check out the site link below, there's a great Q&A and other pet rat links! :)

Believe it or not ...
he very well could have a cold!
Also, any changes made that deviate from the norm. could have adverse effects.
Good Luck
P.S. It wouldn't hurt to check with a vet!
