One of my coworkers is basically getting fired (he was told that if he didn't resign, he would be). Many of the people on my team feel like he was unfairly targeted. We are very sad to see him go.

Any ideas on what we could do for him to let him know of our sorrow at his going? He has only two more days with us.

I would tell him exactly what you wrote here. It's difficult for both the person leaving and the people left behind. Just remember that sometimes you have to play the politcal game at work and you probably won't be able to say anything to upper mgmt about how you feel.

This is indeed a tough situation for your coworker. It is also a tough situation for you, because after his forced resignation, you are STILL part of this organization. And you certainly have to play a diplomatic role in this. Therefore, it may not be appropriate for you to throw a going away luncheon during work hours. However, a going away dinner in the evening outside of work would certainly be appropriate. Perhaps you and your coworkers that the fired employee is close to can attend this party, and keep it small and intimate, without letting the entire organization know of the party.

Do a protest, or strike, or just all quit. Maybe sign a pettition. Only problem is most don't have the backbone to stand up for what they believe in anyway. And most wouldn't participate knowing they would get fired, and since money is more important than what's right and wrong, well, how can you convince peopl.

seeing a coworker go is dissapointing especially if you have become aquiented in the friendly evironment i see some office coworkers make for themselves...

this is though one....

i don;t know...but maybe throwing a small, not too lavish party would help...everyone could say word or too and give the fellow a proper farewell...

i think that'll be nice

He should know that by being coerced into resigning he may lose his unemployment insurance. Of course if they can prove they have cause to fire him due to violation of agreements or ethics he could lose them anyway. The company may just be trying to save themselves money. He should probably contact your State's employment department and find out what his rights are.

Tell him he can use you as reference if he needs somebody from previous work place. Also tell him sometimes you have to let go of old thing in order to make room for new thing and you sincerely wish this will be a new start for him. Also tell him you'll keep your eyes open for any job openings in the area.

I'm not a fan of giving cards for everything...but in this case a card with signatures of all the co-workers would be something small that would probably make him feel good.

Could also get a snapshot of kicking your boss's rear end.

Tell him you all want to take him out to lunch, sign a funny card to cheer him up and tell him how you feel. If you all are in agreement about his firing being unfair, as a group you may want to discuss it with the supervisor doing the firing. My question is, who's next?

Tell him to wait until they fire him that way he can collect unemployment. And give him a card with a nice message from everyone's on it.

A nice heartfelt card filled with money. Also take him out that night to a fun place.
