okay, first...that's so un-PC of you.

The proper term would be People with mental impairments...(they are a person first and a disability second.) LOL...thought I would throw that out there.

Alright off of my soap box.

Yes, people with mental impairments can marry depending on their level of understanding. There are some people, especially those effected with Down Syndrome who are very intelligent in certain areas. Many individuals with mental impairments can live their lives virtually unsupervised. Have their own home, hold down a job, pay their own bills, and balance their check book. that's better then I do some months! So, yes. There are many individuals who would have the mental capacity to understand love and marriage despite the classification of "mentally retarded."

I don't think they are. I think it has something t do with the fact that they might not know the full legal ramificatins of what they're doing. If the ceremony is purely religious and not legal though, then of course they'd be allowed to.
A man could marry a swan that way.

I think anyone who gets married must be mentally retarded. With that said, I think the answer depends on how they function. IF they are unable to make decisions for themselves and are dependant on others for care then no.

Probably depends on the extent to which their mental illness goes. If they are capable of taking care of themselves and functioning in society I don't see why they wouldn't be able to get married.

Of course they are! That's kind of rude though. They are still people. They fall in love and are allowed to be married.

The answer is a qualified yes. If they are so impaired as to not understand what they are doing, then likely a judge will block of annull a marriage.
