Its pretty much the same but usually assasination is is the deliberate killing of an important person, usually a political figure or other strategically important individual. An assassin (one who carries out an assassination) usually has an ideological or political agenda, and regards the target as a serious obstacle to furthering their agenda. Other motivations may be money (in the case of a contract killing), revenge, or acts of espionage at the request of a government. Assassination, like companion terms such as terrorism and freedom fighter, is often considered to be a loaded term.

assasinate means = To murder (a prominent person) by surprise attack, as for political reasons.
To destroy or injure treacherously: assassinate a rival's character
whereas
murder means = The unlawful killing of one human by another, especially with premeditated malice.
Slang. Something that is very uncomfortable, difficult, or hazardous: The rush hour traffic is murder.
To some extent the meanings are quite same.

Murder can happen for no reason. Assassinations are planned. I could murder you right now for the forty bucks in your wallet, or I could plan to assassinate you a week from now to fight the powers that be, you government scumbag! Get it?
