Its pretty much the same but usually assasination is is the deliberate killing of an important person, usually a political figure or other strategically important individual. An assassin (one who carries out an assassination) usually has an ideological or political agenda, and regards the target as a serious obstacle to furthering their agenda. Other motivations may be money (in the case of a contract killing), revenge, or acts of espionage at the request of a government. Assassination, like companion terms such as terrorism and freedom fighter, is often considered to be a loaded term.

assasinate means = To murder (a prominent person) by surprise attack, as for political reasons.
To destroy or injure treacherously: assassinate a rival's character

whereas

murder means = The unlawful killing of one human by another, especially with premeditated malice.
Slang. Something that is very uncomfortable, difficult, or hazardous: The rush hour traffic is murder.

To some extent the meanings are quite same.

assasination is ususally someone of high importance to the public. say you shot tom cruise, that would be considered an assasination because he has a high public standing, if you shot me, that would be a murder, because know one really cares about regular people

Murder can happen for no reason. Assassinations are planned. I could murder you right now for the forty bucks in your wallet, or I could plan to assassinate you a week from now to fight the powers that be, you government scumbag! Get it?

murder is used for killing of one person by other when it is a premeditated action

whereas assassination is almost the same as murder but the victim in this case is a public figure
