You have the choice not to be exposed to it. I live in a world without celebs myself (for the exeption of an occasional tabloid - I love dirt).
I would recommend putting down the remote and straying clear of celeb infested websites. Just because society makes it popular doesn't mean that's all there is to life.
Many people only turn to HBO, NBC, MTV, VH1, Nascar, NFL, NBA, XM, Pop music, Mainstream Rock, Country, Sopranos, American Idol, Laguna Beach, Evanescence, Kelly Clarkson, Kenny Chesney, Dale Jr., etc., because it's "Popular" and they want to get in on the hype.
95% of the "fans" don't even really enjoy it... they just want something to talk about with their socials, or, the big shiny corporate advertisements excites them to the point that they feel they have to participate somehow.
I've often noticed that "Pop Culture Followers" (this includes sports) usually don't know crap about what's going on in the actual world - aside from the blown up rumors, lies and partial truths contributed by the local and major television news networks. These networks only care about publicity, no matter how brutal the story may be, rather than informing citizens of the truth. I call it "Taking advantage of Freedom of Press for Monetary Purposes".
Just because a musician isn't exploited on MTV daily doesn't mean they aren't d*mn good... check them out.
Try getting in touch with your intellectual side. Use the T.V. for educational purposes, i.e., Discovery Channel, National Geographic. Read lots and lots of books, then use the internet to back it up. Experiment with other forms of music besides the mainstream "musicians" that are broadcasted endlessly on radio stations. It is good to watch the news, however, ALWAYS back up stories with further research.
It's amazing how much you have to talk about in a social setting when you have actual things to talk about. I've also noticed that "celeb talk" tends to make guests uneasy and it also makes you look shallow. People also sense when you're only talking about things because you think that's what they like... because it's "popular". Trying to impress people with cliche`s, in turn, only makes you look like a dumba**.
Expand your horizons..... There are many forms of entertainment besides TV, publicized sports, and "mainstream" music. It's only up to you to turn off the TV and spend that useless time more wisely discovering who you are and what your true interests are... you'd be surprised at what you would discover.
There's a great big world out there without celebs. You just have to stop following everyone else and find it.

I get sick of it myself. I don't read the magazines, I don't watch the tv programs. I figure those folks are more screwed up than I will ever be. Why would I listen to anything they had to say on any topic?
