lyrically...r.e.m.
musically...r.e.m.
i'm not a r.e.m. fan, but i think "the edge" is the MOST over-rated turd with a guitar i ever heard.

U2, only because they're still putting out great music, while R.E.M. has faded away. Give R.E.M. their due for what they Have done, though.

U2 Lyrically more intriguing and musically more of an edge--oh pun there...U2 digs deeper into music's essence of truth, harmony and emotional connection. Bono's voice has more character.

gawd...michael stipe and bono are so full of themselves trying to replace mother teresa, but if I have to choose, U2. their music has gotten better year after year, album after album.

R. E. M.
U2 is supposedly the biggest rock band in the world. Maybe they are as far as revenue goes. I don't care. They kinda suck as far as I'm concerned.
