Typically, in a divorce, there are at least two versions to the story- his and hers, sometimes the kids have their version, as well.
Often, both the husband and the wife feel that they've been short-changed or cheated out of something by the other, and want to feel justified in striking back. So they go to their friends, wanting support from the friends, and the friends feel pressured by the divorcing couple to choose.

it's a modern mindset that gives us the need to take sides. black or white, up or down. people who have difficulty in taking sides probably have an inkling that maybe taking a side is unnecessary. society also has a hidden, somewhat unexpressed disgust for people who are undecided because they're the uncalled for "third wheel" in a two-poled world.
i say that in a divorce, EVERYONE should have a side of their own. it's a matter of interpretation, really.

YOu can't be on both sides now can you? You choose the best side. When my parents divorced I didn't know what to do I was more on my moms side though. I know thats probably not any help.

I feel that others are trying to support one side or the other to try to be there for their friend/family member but sides taken when neither one is right and both should be supported in an awful time as this should be taken into consideration It is only my thought

Because it's the splitting apart of a union between two people. Take 2 and minus 1. You gotta pick. If someone tries to stay friends with both people then they are doomed. No way it can be done.

The main reasons would have to be....
1. You like one person more or hate the other one really badly
2. You agree with one side more
3. You sympathize for one side
And it'd be pretty difficult to not have any of those apply to you so that is why it's natural to take sides.

Because it's human nature.. it's only natural to take sides, primarily because there ARE sides to be taken. You can't agree with both person in every situation.. it's not possible.
