The Rev. Fred Phelps, founder of Westboro Baptist in Kansas, contends that American soldiers are being killed in Iraq as vengeance from God for protecting a country that harbors gays. The church members carried signs and shouted things such as "God hates fags" and "God hates you." They actually parade around funerals with signs that say that. Even if the soldier killed was not gay!

Everyone knows someone in the military, how would you feel if, god forbid, they died and at their funeral their were people holding signs saying "HE DESERVED TO DIE!" or "THANK GOD FOR 9/11!"

What the ****??? I know lots of Christians are bigots but you've got to be kidding.
Of course you wouldn't joke about something so incredibly unfunny so I'll assume you're not. How about a link to the story?
UPDATE: Just checked the link. WOW! These people are unbelievable. Are they serious? It almost looks like a sick joke. Could it be???

This guy is obviously a wack job, with more than a few screws loose. There are always a few crazies like this kicking around, and sooner of later some national news network picks up on it and they get their 15 minutes of glory. I heard about something like this a few weeks ago, and this might be the same one, and it turns out that most if not ALL of the members of this church are all family members. So it's not a legitimate church, it's a wacked-out family reunion that makes fools of itself by parading around at soldiers funerals carrying obscene signs and chanting hate slogans.
They should all be gassed befoe they do real harm to someone. Their callous insults are bad enough.

I'm Baptist and all I know is that God hates no one..God loves us..he hates sin. These men are giving their lives for our freedom..and God says there is no grater love than a man who lays down his life for another...Just as Jesus did for us all.
I would suggest that this pastor and its members go back and read the Bible and find out what God says about hate.
There are "biggots" and "fanatics" in every religion and culture...please don't label all Christains or Baptists by this VERY misguided church. They will answer for their own actions some day.

I read about the 'Rev. Phelps' today. He sounds like he is full of hate. With all the problems in the world today, it seems that he shouldn't be spreading such hatred.

Jesus forged out evil spirits. He gave his apostles authority to do the same and they did on get mutually. Joseph Smith became once taken to courtroom in new york and placed in charge of casting out an evil spirit yet seems how there is not any longer any guidelines adversarial to that the choose had to enable him bypass. convinced we've self belief there are evil spirits and they are many times forged out by ability of one given authority from Christ to take action. we do not call it "exorcism" that is a Catholic note. it isn't as dramatic as videos made on the problem. also casting out evil spirits like speaking in tongues - once you've an valuable non secular adventure you do not tell each and everyone and their dogs about it.

I agree with their freedom of speech, however it is just plain tacky. It's rude. If they want to make a point, they need to do their protesting at other places, not at places where people are already grieving.

They've been doing that for years. What they are are a family of fanatics that just want to be heard. They twist the bible to suit their needs. Don't pay any attention to them. They're not worth it.
